"I… I… ", Kareen stammered as the nurse walked closer.
She quickly snashed the phone and turned it on. Her eyes paced from left to right and back as she seemingly read the message on her phone screen.
She raised her sad face up, took a deep breath as she obviously tried not to cry.
"Did… did…", she attempted to talk but her voice broke.
"Excuse me!", She said as she finally broke down and hurriedly paced out of the room with her hand on her mouth.
Kareen looked at her as she walked away and turned to me with a sympathetic expression.
"What's it with boys?!", She asked.
At this time, I could barely hear what she was saying cause I was really drowsy.
……
I was woken up the next morning by the nurse.
"Katie, how do you feel now?", She asked.
I felt a bit lighter. I attempted to sit up and unlike yesterday, the pain had drastically reduced; although still intensed, but at least now I can move.
With a smile I replied: "Better!"
I looked around for Kareen and founding her in her pink Pyjamas sleeping carelessly. One of her legs was on the floor and the other spread across the bed; one of her hand was underneath her head as she drooled all over the bed and the other hand above the bed.
I was about to laugh when I turned back to the nurse and saw the dark circles under her red eyes.
"How do you feel now?", I asked with a bit of sympathy.
On hearing my question, she appeared a bit shocked at first but then nodded and said: "……I am fine!"
"I am a great listener, if you don't mind", I added with a slight smile.
"I said I am fine!", She yelled and brought out a syringe.
"Your arm!", She said harshly, opening her right palm gesturing I place mine on it.
I felt the needle as it puncture my skin and the force of the liquid go into my body.
Afterwards, she cleaned it up, looked at Kareen as stepped out aggressively, hissed and opened the door.
I really don't blame her, her behavior's quite normal for what she had been through.
She actually looks a bit stressed. Slim and slender figure, her hair long and seemingly well maintained. Although was a bit rough today, but it can still be seen that it has been properly kept.
I wonder what drives her to keep working this hard at the expense of her relationship, is it the love for her job, money or something else?
Just as I thought, I heard Kareen yawn, followed by a thud.
I quickly turned to her and found her on the floor as she stood up holding her head.
"Dumb bed! ,I thought I was still home....", She said looking at the bed, sighed and walked towards me.
"How do you feel now sis?", She asked with her hand still on her head.
"I am better!", I said as I placed my feet on the floor.
For the first time in a long time, I could feel the cold tiles underneath my feet; I pushed out of the bed fully putting my weight on them as I attempted to stand up.
I felt my head spin slightly but ignored and stood up anyways.
Kareen watched carefully, her expression was more of fear than surprise or joy.
Standing, I decided to take a step when the door opened once again.
"What are you doing?!", The nurse asked aloud surprised to see me on my feet.
In shock, I sat back down.
"Ouh!", I said holding my head which experienced a sharp pain due to how fast I sat.
"You are supposed to be resting!", She further yelled as she walked closer.
"I don't want to see you up again until I say you should!", She said aloud.
"Why are you shouting?!", I yelled back now angry.
"Can't I explore my own body?! Aren't I allowed to find out how much I have improved to estimate how much longer I'll be staying! Do you think I like staying here with my sister and a mean heartbroken nurse?!", I said aloud.
As soon as my voice fell, I realized in an instant that I had said something wrong.
"Sorry…", I said wishing I could take back my words.
"Save it!", She said as she picked a file by the shelf.
"Do what ever the f_ck you want!!!", She said with her tearful voice and slammed the door close.
"Alright! Permission granted!", Kareen said with a smile.
"What permission?!" I turned to her and asked with an angry tone.
"Permission to do what you want. Now we can go for the auction!", She added.
"What?!", I exclaimed as Kareen continued smiling.
